(Mock) Draft Revisited
1. Beavers: I predicted Joe Flacco, Steve picked Mark Sanchez.
I'll give myself partial credit here for being closish, but Steve went younger and he's right that he didn't go with conventional wisdom/Stafford but I can't argue with this pick. I think I'd have taken Stafford but Sanchez probably would have been my second choice.
2. Hamburglers: I predicted Matthew Stafford, James picked Knowshon Moreno.
I guess he's not sold on LDT and McFadden. I can't say I blame him but I was not particularly in love with any of the rookie RBs this year. The only part of this I got right is the rookie part. I don't like this pick as much as Steve's pick for what that's worth.
3. Old No. 7: I predicted DeSean Jackson, Jason picked Joe Flacco.
Jason later said it was between Flacco and Stafford for him. I actually like this pick a lot more then Jackson, but I didn't think either Stafford or Flacco would be here at pick #3. That said, I was completely wrong here.
4. Ramjets: I predicted Ronnie Brown, Roger agreed!
Look at that! Completely right! Go me! Given the way the draft fell out I'd have thought about Stafford here because I'm surprised he's still on the board, but not everyone is as much of a QB whore as me. I do like this pick. Obviously, the picks in front of him are more about the future than about this year but I think that Brown will score more points this year than anyone else taken in the draft.
5. IC Lagers: I predicted Hines Ward, Tim picked Matthew Stafford.
Hell. I'd have taken Stafford too if he was still on the board. Great pick for the future of this franchise. Ironically, Ward becomes a member of the IC Lagers later in the draft.
6. Rednecks: I predicted Mark Sanchez, John picked Percy Harvin.
I didn't see that coming, but I guess I should have. I rarely focus on rookie WRs, but this is an intrigueing pick. Especially since there wasn't a top-tier young QB left in the draft, I don't hate the pick.
7. Bill: I predicted Knowshon Moreno, Bill picked Chris Wells.
I got very close with this prediction. Moreno was gone so Bill went with the next rookie on the list in Wells.
8. Mimes: I predicted Donald Driver, Mimes picked Lance Briggs.
Maybe a stretch, but this is my pick for the Travian Walker award as the worst 1st round draft pick this year. Sure, Briggs will probably score more points by week 2 than Travian scored his entire fantasy carrear, but this is way early for defense in my opinion. Than again, Mimes won the Left division last year on the strength of his defense and seems set at QB and RB so I guess he has to dip into the lower-value part of the pool regardless.
9. Beavers pt 2: I predicted Greg Olsen, Steve picked Lance Moore.
Right position, wrong player. I can't argue too much about this pick either. We're at the back end of the first round so the big names are gone and WR is a bit of a crap-shoot after the people we all franchised.
10. Flannel: I predicted LenDale White, Clay picked LeSean McCoy.
Right position wrong player again. This is an interesting pick. McCoy stricks me as a high risk/high reward type prospect. Worst case scenario is that he never develops into a high quality back in the pros. Best case is he becomes the next Brian Westbrook. I can't hate this pick even though I probably would have goen with Donald Brown instead.
11. CAPO: I predicted Domenick Hixon, Chris picked Derrick Ward.
Still a homerish pick, but not the position I thought Chris needed to address here. I'm not a big fan of the pick because of the weird situation at RB (and offense in general) in Tampa, but it could work out. And now Chris has every RB that has ever played for the Giants on his roster... although I think Tiki is still available.
12. Hamburglers pt 2: I predicted Chris Wells, James picked Michael Crabtree.
Its a rookie? Got blindsided by the receiver thing again. This is a big risk pick as it looks more and more like Crabtree is throwing away the 2009 season in a contract spat with Oakland but James has already socked him away on the PS and will wait to see if he can become a very good WR in a couple more years. I can't complain too much.
So how'd I do? 1 exactly right, 4 in the neighborhood, and 7 mostly completly wrong. I'm going to give myself an A for getting anything right.
This first round came out pretty typically for recent drafts. Since expansion to 12 teams there have been 4 drafts. Every one had a rookie RB go #1 till this year when we had a rookie QB go in that spot.
The previous 3 drafts averaged 5 RBs, 3.3 QBs, 2.6 WRs, 0.6 DFs, and 0.3 DBs. A kicker has not been taken in the first round in recent memory if ever. This year 5 RBs, 3 QBs, 3 WRs, 1 DF. 0 DBs, and 0 Ks -- right on target.
In 2006 4 rookies were selected in the first round. Since that year, every single draft has had one more rookie taken and 2009 continued the trend with 7 rookies gone in the first round.

Doug, I think you should give yourself a little more credit for your prediction that I'd take DeSean Jackson. I took him in the second round.
