FLOF Mock Draft
I have never even though to do this before. But since I'm not even in the first round (or second...) I have nothing but idol speculation directed toward this end of the draft anyways. As with most mock-drafts, this is my prediction, not my recommendation.
Updated at 1:32 Friday. I've re-arranged some things to take into account the recent trend to fire offensive coordinators now of all times.
Updated Tuesday. I made a couple last-minute adjustments based on the weekends news and developments: Marc Bulger is out in favor of Mark Sanchez for Rednecks and Derrick Ward is downgraded in favor of LenDale White for Flannel.
1. Beavers: Joe Flacco
Past drafts show a focus on offense, especially RB with the top pick. Even last year, with AP in the stables Beavers took Thomas Jones with their first pick. That said, I think their needs are WR and QB. I think they go QB and wait to address WR but I can see why Steve tried to get out of this spot earlier.
My sense is that Matthew Stafford and Ronnie Brown are the class of this draft with Michael Vick the big wild-card. But Beavers get a QB who is both a developmental prospect and can step in as a back-up right away with Flacco and three QBs from the same team might be overkill.
2. Hamburglers: Matthew Stafford
I think this comes down to how James feels about LDT and McFadden. He could also be on the lookout for someone more ready to step in this year at QB, but my guess is that Ryan comes off the practice squad after the draft and platoons with Hasselbeck at QB.
3. Old No.7: DeSean Jackson
WR is clearly the position of weakness here so I think he goes WR. I don't think there is a clear-cut WR available but Jackson seems like a young guy with growth potential and some past success. Jason already has a good young RB in Forte, but I could see him take Vick here despite some prospects at that position.
4. Ramjets: Ronnie Brown
This is the first pick I feel pretty good about. Roger already has 4 WRs on his roster and 2 QBs with potential. Meanwhile, Clinton Portis is surrounded by a couple practice-squad guys who are just waiting to get cut. I'm a little surprised Brown did not get franchised but I'm happy if I'm Roger here.
5. IC Lagers: Hines Ward
Clearly I have no history to go on here. I'm guessing Tim isn't going to bag this season yet. I'm not sure if there is a huge improvement out there at QB or RB so he'll take whatever WR he likes best. I threw Evans out as a possibility here, but I'm going to switch out for Hines Ward based on Buffalo joining the fire-the-offensive-coordinator-the-week-before-the-regular-season club. Clearly the other thing he could do here is pick someone like Marc Sanchez or Vick and play for the future.
6. Rednecks: Mark Sanchez
This will be only the 2nd time in the last 6 years that Rednecks have had a first round draft pick. I suppose there is still time for them to trade it... Assuming John keeps it, I think he's looking back-up QB or a WR. I'll guess QB after what happened last year with Brady. I was going with Marc Bulger here but I've changed my mind and tagged John with a rookie to develop behind his franchise player.
7. Bill: Knowshon Moreno
Just based on numbers I'd guess Bill will look WR or RB here. Originally, I had Bill taking Hines Ward here, but my recent update sent Ward to the Lagers so I'm going to take Bill in my alternate direction with Ward off the board and grab a rookie RB.
8. Mimes: Donald Driver
I think Mimes have to go WR here. They have more RBs then they know what to do with. Rivers seems solid at QB. I had Antonio Bryant here before but gave him the same FtOCtWBtRS downgrade (see IC Lagers above).
9. Beavers: Greg Olsen
They opted for a QB at the top, now they find a WR at the back end of a little run on WRs. I originally had Steve grab Donald Driver here, but now that he's gone I will go with my second thought: Given Steve's tendency to find decent TEs I could see him mini-reach for Greg Olsen here as well... trying to get in on some Bears action.
10. Flannel: LenDale White
Clay needs depth everywhere. Where to start? I'd normally say QB, but I don't think Clay can remember the last time he needed to find an injury replacement for Peyton, so I'm guessing he looks RB with this pick. I had suggested Derrick Ward here but the 3-headed monster makes Tampa look like the new Denver so I'll give the next guy on my list.
11. CAPO: Domenick Hixon
CAPO needs a WR in the worst way. You know, to back up T.O. I think he goes a little homer here as well. Why not get the twofer when you can?
12. Hamburglers: Chris Wells
The last pick of the first round is another double-dip. I could see WR here, but someone has to jump on the rookies. I had Moreno here before I made my recent adjustments and gave Moreno to Bill. So I'll plug in rookie RB 2 in here instead.
... which means one of the 3 guys I called out at the top falls all the fall through the first round. I guess the issue with Michael Vick is that he's a back-up that you can't franchise and can't count on playing unless McNabb gets hurt. And he's just as much a huge gamble as a pure rookie. In some ways Beavers might be the best fit for Vick because he's already pot committed in Phildelphia QBs. Or maybe someone who already has two QBs and can afford to "waste" a roster spot on him like I've been doing with Lienhart for a couple years now. Hey, Steve gets to lead off round #2 so maybe Vick goes then.
