Doug's Pro Bowl QBs
We used to have team owners vote for the FLOF Pro Bowl, but most of you never did, so I'm just going to submit my own for your discussion. This is based solely on each player's performance in the FLOF regular season.
QBs
1st Team: Peyton Manning (No7)
2nd Team: Matthew Stafford (ICL)
I did not spend too much time with the accumulation stats on the FLOF Web site, but Peyton scored more points this season than any other player in FLOF history (371). Tom Brady scored 352 in 1 fewer game in 2007. So Peyton's 2013 had the second highest points per game average of any player ever. Only once did Peyton score below average (15) and he scored above 20 points in 10 of his 13 games.
Matthew Stafford received some stiff competition for the 2nd best QB of 2013. Drew Brees accumulated more points in the same number of games but Stafford's median was 2 points higher and he had one more 20+ pt game then Brees. (There was some hair splitting going on here.) But if you give me a choice between someone like Brees who was slightly more boom and bust and someone like Stafford who was slightly more consistent, I'll take Stafford.
An interesting note on QBs this year. One thing I measured for every player this year is what I call their value over median (for stat geeks this could be equated to value over replacement). The idea is that over the last 2 years is the median QB score is 15. So if your QB scores more than 15 points that's great. If he scored less, that's bad. Peyton Manning contributed 176 points ABOVE median this year for Old No. 7. Peyton's median score was 27 points. So on average Jason could figure to score 12 more points at QB then his opposition.
However only 6 QBs averaged more than 15 points per game this year. I think you can make an argument that, on balance, those 6 QBs were the only ones who contributed positive value to their teams this year.
Besides Peyton, Stafford contributed 55 points over median. Brees contributed 90. The other three were Matt Ryan (+26), Aaron Rodgers (+17), and Tom Brady (+14).
Among the QBs with negative value by this metric, 7 started more than 6 games: Cam Newton (-11), Andrew Luck (-7), Robert Griffin (-26), Colin Kaepernick (-62), Carson Palmer (-52), and Eli Manning (-55).
Tomorrow: RBs.
Then WRs

2 Comments:
Payton was a slam dunk #1. As for #2, think I'd have to take Brees.
Brees and Stafford were very close for me.
