Merry Christmas, Mock Draft Edition
I've heard many say that the NFL draft is like Christmas as teams open shinny new toys in the form of top draft picks. This FLOF Draft will be like that as Jason woke up this morning to find a very large box under his tree. This mock draft looks at who I think teams will take, not who I would take if I were them.
1) Old No. 7: Peyton Manning (QB, Ind).
Yes, Clay failed to protect anyone. I'll let the fact that Peyton is available in the draft sink in.
I suppose Jason could trade out of the slot here, but I think trading Romo and picking up Peyton is the better move by far. Exactly what do you trade for Peyton and feel like you got good value and would anyone be willing to give that up?
2) CAPO: Shonn Grenne (RB, NYJ).
I've had this pick penciled in for a while now. Peyton's presence in this draft gives them the pick of any RB they want and there seem to be a couple decent options at RB available this draft. If I were Chris I'd consider Jamaal Charles and Ryan Matthews here as well but when in doubt I suspect Chris will take the New York product.
3) Drow: Sam Bradford (QB, Stl).
I guess the question here is whether the QB whore of FLOF has changed his tune after selling off 3 QBs before franchising or if he was just making space for shinny new toys. I'm not sure Bradford would be available here if Peyton wasn't available at the top. Its been years since I picked a defensive player in round 1 and I already have 4 WRs so best available RB would be the other option here--see Jamaal Charles and Ryan Matthews if that's the case (candidly, I haven't decided what I'm shooting for here).
4) Hamburglers: Ryan Matthews (RB, SD).
Not only is RB a position of need for Mr. Frazier this is probably the highest rated future prospect left on the board with Bradford gone. I think even if Bradford slips this far, he might still go RB with a look at Jamaal Charles or LeSean McCoy if Matthews is gone.
5) Flannel: LeSean McCoy (RB, Phi).
Once Clay realizes what he's done, he may start praying that Bradford slips past Doug. If so, Bradford could fall to Clay and Clay jumps on the man he hopes will replace Peyton. But with Bradford gone in this mock, I think Clay grabs his old RB. Its not a reach by most projections and he can grab a caretaker or other prospect later in the draft to fill the QB position.
6) IC Lagers: Tim Tebow (QB, Den).
Last year, ICL used the first two picks in their franchise's history on rookies that immediately got stashed on the practice squad. He also recently took a flyer on Leinart before he flamed out, again. McCoy and Clausen would also be options here depending on how Tim feels about Tebow or maybe he goes RB with looks at Jahvid Best or C.J. Spiller or WR with Dez Bryant. Tim has so many early draft picks (6 in the top 3 rounds, 4 in round 2) he has huge flexibility and I think he will add another P.S. player before the draft ends.
7) Beavers: Dez Bryant (WR, Dal).
Steve has been building through the draft with AP and Sanchize recently and McNabb is still on board to hold the fort at QB so WR seems like the target this draft and Bryant is clearly the guy if you want future potential. If Steve wants a more conservative veteran choice he might take a series look at Antonio Gates.
8) Rednecks: Jimmy Clausen (QB, Car).
I've probably skewed this draft farther rookie then it will end up, but Rednecks also love them some rookies early and QB depth is one of the few things this team lacks. If he wants the safer now choice he may pick up Gerrard, but since John just dumped him I'm going to guess he takes a prospect now and assumes Gerrard or his equivalent (maybe Matt Moore?) will be available later in the draft.
9) Drow: Jamaal Charles (RB, KC).
In this case, Charles may be a stand-in for best available young RB. Other options could include Jahvid Best, C.J. Spiller, and Arian Foster. If Drow go RB with their earlier pick, I suspect a QB prospect might be in the cards here which might mean McCoy as the last of the touted rookies or Charlie Whitehurst as an unconventional possibility.
10) Mimes: Ray Lewis (DF, Bal).
Mimes have taken a DF with 2 of their 3 first round picks over the last 4 years. So consider Mr. Lewis as a stand-in for whoever Darin has at the top of his DF board.
11) Ramjets: Mike Sims-Walker (WR, Jac).
Quick applause for Roger managing to franchise the maximum possible 12 players--an even 4 each QBs, RBs, and WRs. Of course, this also means he has numbers at least at the obvious positions for a first round pick. But with Rice's recent injury I think he looks for the best available WR here. Santana Moss, Jeremy Maclin, Mike Wallace, Pierre Garcon, Donald Driver, and probably a fleet of others are also options.
12) Bill: Santana Moss (WR, Was).
Eight years ago, Bill forgot to franchise anyone--which is the only other time this has happened. He had the first pick in the draft that year and reacquired Corey Dillon and also picked up this Tom Brady kid at the top of round 2. Bill had the last 5 picks in the draft that year. CJ2K has the RB position locked down and Bill has numbers at QB so I'll have him go WR here but I clearly think there are a number of guys he could chose at this slot.
