How'd That Mock Go?
Draft's over. So lets review the predictions.
1) Old No. 7: Peyton
I get no credit for predicting this.
2) CAPO: Ryan Matthews
Partial credit. I guess the homer-ism does not extend to the other NY team. Then again, that would have been my pick in his spot and I was hoping he'd fall to me, so I'm certainly not throwing stones.
3) Drow: Shonn Greene
That said, I'm happy to take my second choice here. In the end I was picking between a back-up RB to compete with the aging Jackson or a developmental QB and I liked the talent at RB better this year plus I thought I could pick up a decent developmental QB with my next pick... I suspected not Stafford but maybe Tebow who was 2nd on my list of pure prospects at QB.
4) Hamburglers: Jamaal Charles
Good pick. I actually thought he'd fall farther as people overlooked him as a late season fluke or just a Chief. I essentially nailed this one too as Ham simply took the guy I recommended given the guy I had him take was already gone.
5) Flannel: LeSean McCoy
I kind of called this but its a pick to discuss anyhow because Bradford was available. I would have taken Bradford as Clay needs to find a QB for his future. That said, I don't have any issue with LeSean McCoy as a pick per se.
6) ICL: Arian Foster
I liked that pick but obviously had no idea what Tim was going to do with this pick. I really thought he'd take Bradford here but I guess he figured he was full of QBs. The only reason I moved him off a QB in my revision was he basically told me he wasn't going QB. So I put him on a WR and he goes for a RB. But he got a decent pick for a RB at this spot I think.
7) Beavers: Mike Wallace
Right position, but wrong player. I like the pick. Although I think Gates lasted a lot longer then he should have, I think there was a huge group of WRs worthy of being picked in the draft and Wallace is one of them. If I needed a WR, I'd have looked at him.
8) Rednecks: Dez Bryant
Bryant falls one spot from my mock to Rednecks who I also had taking a WR here. This wasn't shocking and I like the pick. I had my eye on Dez if he fell.
9) Malleus: Sam Bradford
I wasn't really expecting this on several fronts. I wasn't expecting to trade this pick until yesterday morning and I wasn't expecting Bradford to be available here. I figured I have to take him at 3 if I wanted him because I didn't think he'd fall past Clay or someone else would take a flyer. In the end, Haydn pulled the trigger on our trade which worked out to essentially: Ben for Bradford and Ray Lewis. I like the trade because Ben should give me a more reliable known quantity for a backup QB then Kolb -- as much as I like Kolb. I can only guess why Haydn likes the trade, but I'll guess he likes Bradford's upside better then Ben tendency to drop his pants.
10) Mimes: Antonio Gates
Most shocking pick of the draft. Although, to be fair, Darin has taken offensive players in the first round before. Just not real recently. As noted before, I like Gates as the only WR left standing in SD.
11) Ramjets: Pierre Garcon
As far as I can tell Pierre Garcon is simply the french canadian version of Mike Simms-Walker so I nailed that pick.
12) Bill: Jon Beason
Playing the role of Darin tonight was Bill.
To sum up: 1 I get no credit for, 2 of my own picks that I probably shouldn't consider, 1 exactly right, 5 in the neighborhood and 3 I wasn't even close on. Better then last year actually...
